Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: James Valder, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at The Princeton choose senior living, where respect, care, and meaningful hospitality shape resident dining.

Finding Purpose by Accident

As Culinary Director at The Princeton, I found my way into senior living quite by accident. My wife submitted my resume to a senior living community while I was still working in catering at an event space in downtown San Antonio. That led to an interview for a community in Colorado.

The path took a few turns from there. I ended up with that company, but in Tulsa, Oklahoma. What began as an unexpected opportunity became a meaningful career in senior living culinary.

Residents have taught me that it truly is a small world. Over the years, I have met residents with surprising connections to my own life. Those moments remind me to treat everyone with respect and kindness.

In Tulsa, I met a resident who had gone to high school with my grandfather in Wisconsin. He had also served in the Navy with him. In Overland Park, I met a resident who worked with my next-door neighbor from childhood in Florida. At The Princeton, I met a resident who had been close friends with my late father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Serving With Skill and Care

One favorite tradition is the monthly Candlelight Dinner. These events give residents the chance to try foods that may be outside their comfort zones. They also give the culinary team a wonderful opportunity to showcase what they can do.

Success in this work takes the ability to receive criticism well. Residents will tell you honestly whether they enjoyed a meal or disliked it. That feedback is important.

A strong culinary team listens without taking feedback personally. Each comment creates a chance to learn, adjust, and serve better. In senior living, that kind of openness helps build trust with residents.

One moment that shows the impact of this work happens during difficult times. Delivering comfort trays to families can feel heartbreaking. It can also feel deeply meaningful.

In those moments, food becomes a small source of comfort during a family’s time of need. It is a reminder that dining in senior living is not only about daily meals or special events. Sometimes, it is about offering care when words are not enough.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
