The Princeton Senior Living Executive Director Shares How He Got His Start in Senior Living

Category: Senior Living

Author: Michael Mayberry, Executive Director

Senior living has certainly changed over the past decade. An industry that once provided very little hands-on care has blossomed into a wonderful option for older adults. It now provides varying levels of assistance with residents’ activities of daily living, while arranging many opportunities for socialization and community. I am fortunate to work for Arrow Senior Living leading The Princeton Senior Living team. I would like to share a little about my journey to becoming a senior living leader.

While working as the Executive Director of Grace United Community Ministries, I came across an opportunity to apply for a Long Term Care (LTC) Administrator position with a local nursing home in Kansas City, MO. The interview was successful, and the company was ready to take the next important step. However, I did not have needed an LTC license to work as an administrator. I immediately submitted my credentials to the State of Kansas and was approved to move forward in the licensing process. I enrolled in the AIT program with Kansas Adult Care Executive (KACE), and six months later, I sat for the state exam and received my LTC license.

I landed a 164-bed Administrator position with Health Management of Kansas, where I spent almost four years. I returned to Kansas City to lead a 120-bed assisted living community before taking my current position as the Executive Director at The Princeton Senior living.

I continue to work in senior living for the purpose of serving others, the residents, their families, and the employees, to the best of my abilities.

Arrow Senior Living is about pushing the agenda to be the best in the industry. I am inspired by the CEO when I hear her speak about all the possibilities in front of us and how we can change the senior living communities throughout the country and the world. We also do an excellent job celebrating people and different cultures. Something exciting is always taking place in our Arrow communities.

More and more residents will move into our communities in the next several years for various reasons, including better care. Therefore, the industry will require more from our leaders and employees. Employee retention will continue to be the number one challenge in the short and long run. To be a great organization, we must continue to hire for the heart and develop the required skills to serve impactfully in the industry.

If someone is considering a career in senior living management, I say, “Go for it!” We all can make a difference in the lives of the residents, their families, and the employees. Working in senior living is a great place to share and implement new ideas to help improve the industry overall.
