Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.
Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at The Princeton, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience begins when a resident feels loved, accepted, and safe from day one. At The Princeton, that welcome starts with thoughtful preparation and personal attention. It also includes support from Resident Ambassadors who understand the first few days.
Each month, the Resident Services Director and Sales Team meet with ambassadors. They discuss new move-ins and prepare for each welcome. Together, they create welcome baskets, signs, and a welcoming committee parade. These details help each new resident feel celebrated.
The team also reviews the calendar with new residents. Ambassadors invite them to events so they can learn the rhythm of community life.
The community has eight Resident Ambassadors. There is one on each floor and one on each side. This creates a helpful “floor monitor” feeling for new residents. It gives them someone nearby who can answer questions and offer support. It also provides a friendly connection as they settle in.
Some of the most meaningful welcomes begin with learning a resident’s story. Once the team has a biography and helpful information, ambassadors can offer a better welcome. They can approach each new resident in a way that feels comfortable. Some residents may appreciate a visit in their apartment. Others may feel more at ease meeting in the dining room.
Ambassadors invite new residents to events. They share lunch or dinner with them. They also help include them in happy hours and other gatherings. These invitations create opportunities for friendship. They also help new residents feel less alone.

One meaningful example involved an ambassador and a new resident who were both pastors. They connected right away through their shared paths in ministry. That kind of bond can make a new community feel familiar quickly. It begins with something deeply personal and meaningful.
Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they understand the transition. They understand the change, even when each person’s circumstances are different. By sharing their stories, they begin to share their lives. Those connections can become a powerful source of comfort.
Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community through warmth, engagement, and steady support. They breathe life into all three neighborhoods. They also help build a positive culture where residents feel seen and included. As the social and emotional heartbeat of the community, they build trust and offer kindness. They reduce loneliness and help new residents feel they truly belong.
Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
