Chef Shares Sentiments

Finding Purpose in an Unexpected Place

As Culinary Director at The Princeton Senior Living, I approach each day with passion, not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

I became a culinary director in senior living quite by accident—my wife submitted my resume to a senior living company without my knowledge. After flying to Colorado for an interview, I accepted the position, drawn in by the exceptional benefits package. That unexpected move launched a deeply fulfilling career.

From Catering to Community

My background in catering and my time as Executive Chef at a multi-venue event space helped prepare me for this role. Managing multiple events each day taught me to plan ahead, adapt quickly, and prioritize tasks by urgency. Those experiences sharpened my time management and multitasking skills, which are essential in senior living kitchens.

Two senior residents and a team member smile together at a patriotic celebration, surrounded by red, white, and blue balloons with festive attire and leis.

What I enjoy most about this industry is simple—the residents. They are, hands down, the best part of my day.

Each morning, I start by dropping off my things in the office, greeting the team with a cheerful “howdy,” and grabbing a cup of coffee. These small moments set the tone for the day and create a sense of camaraderie that carries into our work.

Advice for Future Culinary Leaders

For those exploring a culinary career in senior living, I recommend building a strong foundation. Develop a diverse palate, understand regional preferences, and become familiar with common specialized diets. Guest satisfaction often depends on the ability to honor local tastes while meeting dietary needs.

To me, success means creating meals that bring joy. If I’ve made residents smile and laugh over a good meal, I know I’ve done my job.

At day’s end, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
