Dispelling Senior Living Myths

Category: Senior Living

Author: Stacy Russell, Executive Director

Arrow Senior Living is known for doing things a little differently and challenging the status quo within the industry. It’s just who we are! Even with all the technological conveniences of today such as social media and websites, it is still common to meet individuals with a skewed perception of what senior living looks like. In this blog, I want to share my senior living journey, why I remain committed to the industry, the biggest myth I believe exists, and how to help others overcome the myths surrounding our beautiful Princeton Senior Living community and services.

My journey in the healthcare field began when I pursued a degree to become a Physical Therapy Assistant. A role I held for 12 years across various settings including skilled nursing, home health, hospitals, independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Most recently, I served as a Director of Rehab. It was during this time that I crossed paths with Belinda Brown, the Executive Director at The Parkway. She encouraged me to apply for the Memory Care Director position at The Princeton. I joined Arrow in October 2021, and from the outset, I found immense fulfillment in my role in Memory Care.

Fostering Meaningful Connections: A Journey at The Princeton Independent Living

As we opened the doors to The Princeton Independent Living in February 2022 and Assisted Living in April 2022. I had the privilege of forming connections and bonds with residents and staff throughout the community. While awaiting the opening of Memory Care in May, I actively contributed to various aspects of the community, assisting with resident moves and community operations. When the opportunity for the Executive Director role arose in May 2023. I felt compelled to take on the challenge, driven by my desire to support the community as a whole and nurture the relationships I had cultivated across the community with residents and staff.

What continues to motivate me to come to the community each day are the residents and employees. The unique relationships built with the residents have enriched my life beyond measure. From sharing in moments of joy to offering comfort during times of sorrow. I’ve been privileged to be a part of their lives. Whether it’s being invited to birthday parties, family gatherings, or simply visiting a resident’s apartment to share in their excitement over something new, these interactions are truly invaluable. Our employees, ranging from ages 16 to 70. They are some of the most compassionate and dedicated individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Our team consistently comes together to support one another, both in professional and personal capacities, demonstrating unwavering commitment to our residents every day.

Empowering Independence: Thriving in a Vibrant Senior Living Community

One of the biggest myths about senior living is the misconception that moving to a senior living community equates to losing independence. To address this fear, we focus on highlighting the opportunities for enhanced quality of life that come with living here. We offer a diverse four-page menu. This is to ensuring residents have a variety of options to choose from. Our dining room is open from 7 am to 7 pm, providing flexibility in mealtimes. Our resident services team actively seeks feedback to add new events to the calendar. We regularly organize outings, including trips to the casino. Living in our community fosters meaningful relationships among residents. Who even often organize impromptu events such as poker nights or game-watching gatherings. Through these initiatives, we aim to dispel misconceptions and create a vibrant, supportive environment where residents can thrive while maintaining their independence.

I hope you found this helpful, and I encourage you to share it with others because here at Arrow, we are committed to reshaping the perception of senior living! Search #whatseniorlivinglookslike, and you will find so many great things that happen in our community every single day.
